Cancer research saves lives
At Cancer Council SA, we believe that no one should lose a loved one to cancer. That’s why we are committed to funding and conducting research in all aspects of cancer and improving the quality of life and survival rates for people with cancer.
Thanks to the contribution of cancer research, over the last 20 years in Australia we have seen;
- Cancer mortality rates decline by 18%.
- Cancer survival rates for some common cancers increase by as much as 36%.
- Today, almost 7 in 10 Australians will survive at least 5 years after a cancer diagnosis.
- An estimated 61,000 Australian lives saved by improvements in cancer prevention, screening and treatment.
Help improve cancer survivorship for people with intellectual disability
Do you have an intellectual disability, or have you supported someone with intellectual disability and cancer?
We want to hear from you.
Researchers from Flinders University and Cancer Council SA are doing a national research project to make cancer survivorship better for people with intellectual disability. This project is funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
We’re looking for:
- adults with intellectual disability (with or without a history of cancer)
- disability service providers who have supported someone with intellectual disability and cancer since the introduction of the NDIS
- health professionals who have supported someone with intellectual disability and cancer since the introduction of the NDIS
- informal supporters (e.g. family, friends) of someone with intellectual disability and cancer since the introduction of the NDIS.
What’s involved?
- Take part in a one-hour interview or 1.5-hour focus group.
- Join online (Microsoft Teams) or in person.
- Use drawing or other ways to share your thoughts if you like.
- Bring a friend or support person if you want.
- Receive a $50 gift card to thank you for your time.
We want to learn:
- what helps (or makes it harder) to get the right cancer support
- what resources people need
- what needs to change to make cancer care more inclusive and accessible.
You can watch a short Easy Read video about the study here:
This study is approved by the Flinders University Human Research Ethics Committee (Project Number: 8857).
